… were just some of the challenges I faced as boom operator for a film set in London for release in China.
This feature-length film was made over 2 weeks, and provided an usual set of demands for boom operation:
The first major point is that majority of the film was spoken in Mandarin – this made following a script somewhat difficult, having to rely on memorising the (sometimes only one) rehearsal to get the mic to the right spot.
Other challenges came from a ‘perfect storm’ of filming with 2 cameras, many many mirrors, lighting/shadows, and the inability for certain actors to be given lav mics (often due to lack of clothing) therefore relying entirely on the boom and myself to navigate the edge of frame with absolutely no room for error.
